Greetings from STR Tech
Greetings from all of us at STR Tech
Introduction
Welcome to the first Newsletter on SharePoint 2010. Since you are reading this, am sure you are as excited as we are about upcoming SharePoint release. We will continue to bring more knowledge in this technology spectrum to the community.
Polls
I had posted few polls on our web site for SharePoint 2010. Here is one of them; highlighting the compelling features. SQL Table like behaviour and Performance Point integration were two areas which stand out. Note that there are “All of the above” also marked by participants. I would say SharePoint 2010 is nothing short of a new era in the SharePoint world, bringing multitude of new features and enhancements. Please note that these are not scientific polls and all the responses are anonymous. Also the features here are only the ones which were posted on Internet on different sites. The actual release will have lot more than these.
Videos
Here is a link to the sneak peak of what’s coming. These are videos on Microsoft site. There are 3 of them i.e. Overview, IT Professional and Developer. Everyone irrespective of you work role, may want to see the overview. If you are a SharePoint Architect watching all 3 of them would make sense. Here is another link from YouTube that dives more into Visio Services for SharePoint 2010. Visio services for SharePoint allows us to publish a Visio document as a web based document and along with that connect the diagram to data. Hence we can see real-time data on Visio document.

New Services in SharePoint 2010
In MOSS 2007 there were 2 services that integrated products like InfoPath and Excel with SharePoint i.e. Form Services for SharePoint, Excel Services for 2007. SharePoint 2010 comes with 3 additional services i.e. Performance Point, Visio and, Access Services for SharePoint. Another additional is SQL Server R2 Analysis Services integration besides Reporting Services (which was already integrated with MOSS 2007). That means business intelligence data would be available right into a SharePoint Dashboard (ofcourse based on Security). Here is a link for this. Please note that these are only few new services mentioned above per my information. The actual release may have more...
InfoPath 2010 and SharePoint 2010
InfoPath 2010 also brings rich functionality for SP 2010. Here is an excerpt from MSDN Blog on InfoPath 2010:
“With InfoPath 2010, SharePoint Server 2010, and SharePoint Designer 2010, you can easily create powerful team, departmental or enterprise applications on top of SharePoint Server.
· Form-based applications: InfoPath forms can be integrated with components such as workflow, reporting, and custom Web pages to create rich form-based applications.
· Document Workflows: InfoPath can be used to design custom workflow initiation and task forms that drive document management processes.
· Business Connectivity Services: Integrating with BCS, it is straightforward to design InfoPath forms that create, read update, and delete business data from a back-end system."
Can we do something today to get prepared for SharePoint 2010?
Well all these features look great, but is there something we can do today to get prepared for the next release? The answer is “Yes” we can.
Users: SharePoint 2010 will have a new Ribbon Interface as it is in office 2007 applications today. Hence you might want to start using Office 2007 applications if you have not done so already. This will make you comfortable with the upcoming interface in SharePoint 2010 as well Office 2010. Since Office 2010 will continue to have Ribbons like Office 2007, why not start getting used of it now...

IT Professionals and Developers:
Here is a link to the page which gives information for IT Professionals and Developers on getting ready...

If you are planning to upgrade from SharePoint 2003 to SharePoint 2010 then it will be a 2 step process i.e. SPS 2003 --> MOSS 2007 SP2 -- > SharePoint 2010. But don’t worry, the rewards are worth doing the upgrade
Need Demos?
If you are looking for some Demos, STR Tech will be creating Demos for SharePoint 2010 when get access to the software. We will be glad to give a presentation to people in your organization. Unfortunately we do not have access to SharePoint 2010 at this time, and even if we had, NDA would not have allowed us to disclose any information.
